Everything was shot using a tripod an external remote. The camera was in manual mode. I wish I had a full frame to possibly capture the outer edges of the fireworks in some of the shots.

The city of New York built this ramp for Winterjam New York '09. I didn't get a chance to go to the Big Air competition the night before but here are some photos from the more public event. There were games, food, another area where you could slide down the hill, like a winter "carnival". I hope to get a chance to go again next year but for the night event so I can photograph Shaun White!!

So since it's a Friday and it's really cold outside, I thought I try the Focus Stacking technique again. So I brought out this knife.
Here is the setup:
- I used the 100 mm f/2.8 macro lens.
- The photo was a combination of 5 photos.
- Flash was to the camera left.
- I believe the power was at 1/4 power.
- I was shooting the flash through a shoot-through umbrella.

I know the photo isn't perfectly clean, but I think this is the cleanest I've gotten without much fiddling with the program. This photo was generated using default settings in the software. Enjoy!!

12-25-08 Bryant Park Ice Skating

I was just too lazy to do anything special to the photos. Just went to Bryant Park to take pictures of people ice skating and to hopefully capture their expressions. Hopefully I accomplished my goal. I was expecting there to be sun, but we got there kind of late. So I had my circular polarizer and UV filter both attached. I didn't want to take the CP off in public so I just left it on. Hopefully I didn't butcher the pictures too badly. My first time using it and hopefully I'll be able to use it in more creative ways. Enjoy!!

12-13-08 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

So here is my adventure today for going to the Rockefeller Center to take pictures of THE Christmas tree. First off, I went to the Center on Dec. 3rd to see the actual lighting of this Christmas tree but there were so many people that I couldn't stand it anymore so I left. Various streets were blocked off at the time and people were camped out since noon that day. Anyways, so today, I woke up around 4 a.m. because they turn the Christmas tree lights back on at 5:30 a.m. everyday until Jan. 09, 2009. I wanted to get there in time to see them turn the lights on, but by the time I got there, it was about 5:35 a.m. and the lights had already been turned on. Oh wells, bummer! In lieu of that, I met two college girls who were at a club all night and just decided to see the tree this morning. They asked me to take a picture of them with the tree and afterwards, they went on their merry way. We had some small talk but all the time in my head, I was like, "Hmm, am I going to get mugged? I do have A LOT of camera gear on me." Anyways, not long afterwards, I took my tripod out of my bag and started to set it up. Then the officer by the tree yells out, "You can't setup a tripod here!" I was shocked so I just obeyed (for now) and closed up my tripod. I wandered around, took photos of this and that, then I went to the other side of the tree and I found another photographer who had his tripod setup so I decided to setup next to him. Luckily he finished shooting his photos and I was able to take a few photos before another officer came by and told us we had to put our tripods away. Grrr!!! At this point in time, my hands are frozen from setting up the tripod. I was starting to get annoyed. While my finger was stlil on the shutter release trigger, I asked the officer why couldn't we use our tripods and he respectfully replied, "Because this is private property." The other photographer talked (stalled) to the officer for another 2 min. and within that time span, I just took some more photos and adjusted the settings blindly. We then folded up our tripods and kindly asked the officer where can we setup the tripod. He said the sidewalked so he walked with us and told us we could setup the tripod behind this imaginary line he drew out with his foot. He said this is where the property ends. To further add to his annoyance, he said that we wouldn't setup in the middle of the sidewalk because we would be blocking the walking pedestrians. Keep in mind this is like friggin 6 a.m.!!! There was NOBODY walking except us photographers. Whatevers. We just setup and started shooting and shortly after, I went home because my hands were extremely frozen, almost turned a shade of purple/blue. The long and short of it all, this has been a very interesting and fun experience!!

Trying to get the milky water feel. I hope it worked. Too bad the composition isn't that great. I tried to use the leaves to frame the water source. Not sure if it works for me or not. Kind of makes the picture seem "busy". I had a very limited amount of space to work with. My first photo attempts at taking photos of bridges at night. Got to use my tripod that I just recently purchased and was thoroughly satisfied with it =D It was quite windy that night so I am glad that the wind did not affect the camera while opening the shutter for 30 sec. I used my backpack to weigh down the tripod as well. I'm sure a combination of the tripod and added weight helped with the success of the photo. Enjoy!!

All I have to say is that butterflies are extremely hard to capture. Especially at 9:30 a.m. It was already hot by that time and they were flying around non-stop. I just got lucky and saw this one still perched on a leaf. I didn't get more than 3 shots before it flew away. Luckily one came out alright. Enjoy!

Well, here is my first HDR image. I guess I got lucky that it turned out okay. The clouds and palm trees are a bit blurred because there was a lot of wind that day. I don't know what spider this is, but hopefully I will find out soon enough. I definitely need to make a better diffuser for my flash. In any case, this spider makes a fairly big web. I had to crawl under its web and laid on my back. Luckily I have live view on my camera so I could just approximate it. I must have tried to take at least 10 shots of this spider. As a result, 10 flashes, which ultimately resulted in the spider shooting down quickly from it's web about 1 inch. Because it did that, it surprised me and I got so scared so I got out of there ASAP!! It wasn't fun for me, but the friends that went with me, laughed their asses off!! I think it was the spiders' way of saying, this is my territory, get the hell out!!

I have to say that trying to capture a macro of these honeybees are quite difficult. It was only 9 a.m. and these bees were working fast. They spent less than10 seconds on a flower and just moved to the next one. I guess I just need to go earlier and try to get them in the morning when the weather is a lot cooler and thus they'll be less active. It was definitely an experience because I just had to squat there and wait patiently for them to come to me. I was also afraid that they would sting me. Whew!! So for now, you just get to see the pollen sac that they make.

Here are some of the better photos out of the entire set. And these by far, are not up to my standards, but it is a place for me to remind myself and to show others my baseline in macro photography. Hopefully in a year or so, I will have improved.

All of these photos were hand-held. My equipment has gotten a lot heavier (heavier lens and external flash unit) and I can't hold the camera as steady anymore. Hence the reason for the high ISO. But in the end, these are just okay photos and not great photos!

I just want to describe the first two images. The little orange frog is REALLY TINY!!! They can fit on penny. They are just that small. Kind of cute :-P I did take pictures of poisonous frogs, but all those photos are blurry. I have to say that in person, the colors on the poisonous frogs are beautiful!! What I like about the various species of frogs are their eyes. It seems like each specie of frog, the make up of their eyes are different. Enjoy the photos.

This bird is definitely not very pretty at all. But at the tip of its beak, its very pointed, so I'm assuming it might use it to break open eggs? Who knows. I know this was an outdoor picture and I forgot to change the ISO setting on this picture. I also just wanted to point out how I like how the focus is on the subject. You can see the wire fence still, but it is very blurred, you can barely see it.

I just wanted to point out that I don't think I knew how to take these kind of pictures because the camera captured the motion/reflection of the water better than my sharks. Perhaps I need a filter of some sort. But the pictures that came out were definitely very interesting.

This image was taken with continuous shooting and this time I showed all three continuous images to show the movement. The camera was focused not on its tentacles but on the "flowery" part of the organism. I guess I should have tried something different so that everything would be clear. I like the balance of the rays in this picture. I don't feel like I have over exposed the rays and you can tell where the sun came through and where it didn't. If anything, maybe in the top left hand corner of this picture, the lighting should be a little dimmer. Not to sure though. You decide. :-P
